Event Pick: Grass Panther CD Release Show at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery

April 9

Grass Panther lurks in close spaces. A solo project of local guitarist Michael Harl, his unpolished emotional renderings come across as if they’re inside your head. On the tightly wound “Over the Underground,” from his new release, “Vignette,” Harl’s condemnation of heroin chic subverts Lou Reed’s flirtation with druggy excesses into a declaration of self. The acoustic melancholy of “Tomorrow I’ll Shed” expands the range of the intimate distances he keeps fronting post-rock groups, Canary Oh Canary and Manzara, with a haunting ballad that wouldn’t sound out of place on Nick Drake’s atmospheric folk album, “Pink Moon.” Steeped in history but not beholden to it, Harl celebrates the release of his solo CD with a show Saturday, April 9, at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery. Backing him will be bassist Chrissie Lozano of Lady God and timekeeper Jake Sellers of the Hot Seats, with opening sets by locals Samantha Pearl and Red Money and Brooklyn, New York-based dream poppers Wilder Maker. 5-9 p.m. Free. hardywood.com.
