Event Pick: Gay Cum Daddies, Hallelujah, Bon Ski and Gum Arabic at Gallery5

Aug. 7

Like everything else about Texas, bands from the Lone Star State do weird bigger than just about everyone else. The obstinate, absurdist concertos of Denton’s Gay Cum Daddies are openly contentious and vehemently unmusical. Amazingly prolific, the group’s combative peculiarities draw from the don’t-tread-on-me sounds of 20th-century Texan weirdos Stickmen with Rayguns, Butthole Surfers and Ed Hall to create its ear vandalisms. On the group’s most recent temper tantrum, “Crumbs Tour,” tunes are often short and nonlinear, barely held together by nasally narratives, non-sequitur outbursts and surreptitious humor. The audio equivalent of a Jackson Pollock painting, Gay Cum Daddies spew their audio abstractions across the stage at Gallery5 on Sunday, Aug. 7. The night also features sets by lounge mentalists Bon Ski from Norfolk and Richmond malcontents Hallelujah and Gum Arabic. Doors open at 7 p.m. $5.
