Event Pick: Floetry and Janine and the Mixtape at the National

July 16

Specializing in silky smooth, new millennium R&B, Floetry floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. The British singing and songwriting duo of Marsha Ambrosius and Natalie Stewart have written tunes for Jill Scott, Jazz of Dru Hill, Glenn Lewis, Bilal and Michael Jackson since moving to the States in 2000. But nobody does their distinctive take on modern Top 40 romance better than they. It’s a powerfully seductive mix of traditional R&B with soul, jazz, hip-hop and funk that accentuates their vocal charms. Tunes from the 2005 release, “Flo’Ology,” such as the thumping temptation of “Closer” and the aching ballad, “Sometimes U Make Me Smile,” showcase the duo’s stylistic and emotional range that’s endeared it to millions of fans worldwide. Back together after disbanding in 2010, the seven-time Grammy-nominated duo brings its neo soul to the National on Thursday, July 16. Brooklyn’s Janine and the Mixtape open. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $30-$35. thenationalva.com.
