Event Pick: First Fridays in the Richmond Arts District

Sept. 2

To start the three-day weekend off right, I strongly suggest mingling with the herd at Richmond’s monthly arts social. And First Fridays will kick into prime time Sept. 2, with Labor Day weekend signaling the unofficial end of summer. It’s an especially good month for viewing, with the collaborative exhibition “Up All Night (Expect a Miracle)” by Matt Spahr and Valerie Molnar opening at ADA Gallery, the group show “D’Angelo/Cabada/Horsely/Ogburn” at the new Art-Law Building (formerly Art 6), the varied political works of “Stump” at Candela Books and Gallery, and “Signal Flare,” the first solo exhibition by Richmond-based artist, muralist and writer Mickael Broth at Gallery5. When I go, I usually let the cards fall in the wind, because there are myriad creative diversions. Weather permitting, the city’s arts district will be a fevered hub of activity, so get there early. The multiblock art party runs loosely from 6-9 p.m. For information, visit rvafirstfridays.com.
