Richmond is in the midst of getting completely hip-hopped. Epic Fest V, the annual festival started in 2011 by longtime friends Derail “Cain McCoy” Hampton and Robert “Octavion X” Markum, takes over the city from Tuesday to Sunday, June 23-28, with a series of events and showcases at the Broadberry, the Camel, the Top and Gallery5. The two entrepreneurs created the independent music, arts and media group Slapdash in 2009 to bring underground music and culture to broader audiences, and Epic Fest is its signature event. True to its name, an epic number of rappers, producers and DJs will grace the various stages including Richmond’s own Dr. Millionaire, Floridian female rapper Koi Kurama, J’sar from Newport News, New York’s Kadeem King and many others.
