Event Pick: Dumb Waiter, Wandcraver and Get in the Car at Gallery5

Feb. 26

Dumb Waiter makes distinctively Richmond music. A mixture of avant jazz and progressive rock held together by a punk esthetic, the quartet is the latest in the city’s decades-long history of producing angular instrumental riff peddlers (Orthotonics, Alter Natives, Breadwinner, King Sour, Snack Truck etc.). The intensely orchestrated assemblages on its 2013 release, “Is That Chocolate?” recall ’70s-era King Crimson and the jazz noise freak-outs of John Zorn’s Naked City. For all its sagacious attributes, the music is primarily physical. From the exacting intricacies of “Indubitably Dumbfounded” to the shifting modal moods of “Rub-a-dub-dub-dub,” Dumb Waiter hits body and mind with tactical precision. The group serves its brain salad surgeries at Gallery5 on Friday, Feb. 26. Lo-fi psychedelic rockers Wandcraver from Norfolk and Richmond punk mathematicians Get in the Car open. Doors open at 8 p.m. $6. gallery5arts.org.
