Event Pick: Cavum Record Release Show at Strange Matter

March 18

I’m a sucker for hooks, whatever the genre. If a song has something I can’t forget, I’ll listen repeatedly. And Richmond band Cavum has hooks. The group’s sharp, folk-rooted rock lures are baited with liberal doses of distorted echo, making them highly desirable to anyone who savors dream-poppers Mazzy Star, My Bloody Valentine or Jesus and the Mary Chain. “Spirit Weaver,” the first single off the group’s new release, “ebb//flow,” on local label Bad Grrl Records, works as a slow-acting intoxicant. The subtle build to soaring release emphasized by Jackson Meyer’s wistful vocal is the epitome of modern psychedelic catchiness. On Friday, March 18, Cavum celebrates the release of its hook-filled new album at Strange Matter. Richmond rockers Headlessmantis and Floridian folk transplant Julie Karr open. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $5. strangematterrva.com.
