I wonder if the engineers who developed the Volkswagen Käfer for the German Labor Front in 1936 had any idea what the future held for their creation. One thing is certain: Adolf Hitler, who took an active interest in the early development of the People’s Car, didn’t think he’d lose World War II. From fascist beginnings, the two-door, rear-engine economy car internationally known as the Volkswagen Bug became a beloved and iconic part of 1960s American peace and love nostalgia. That’s the history on display during ”Bugstock 2: Déjà Vu” on Sunday, Aug. 21, at Twin Hickory Park. The day features a showcase of Volkswagens of all vintages and styles with automotive-related activities, contests, games and showcases. There will plenty of food and entertainment to take you back to the era of the hippie. The machine-based festivities take over the great outdoors from 1-4 p.m. Free. Call 501-7275 or visit henrico.us.
