Event Pick: “#BlackLivesMatter” at Dogtown Dance Theatre

Saturday, Aug. 15

A provocative topic is addressed head-on in the new original play, “#BlackLivesMatter,” written and performed by young people enrolled in Art 180’s eight-week summer arts program. Produced in partnership with the social justice theater company the Conciliation Project, the play is inspired by the national grass-roots movement that started as a hashtag in the wake of the July 2013 shooting death of black teen Trayvon Martin. The young storytellers use a combination of music, dance and visual art to express their viewpoints and the challenges they face growing up. The free performances are Saturday, Aug. 15, at Dogtown Dance Theatre, followed by a community discussion and reception. Families are encouraged to attend, but the subject matter may not be suitable for young children. Showtimes are 4-6 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Call 233-4180 or visit art180.org.
