EVENT PICK: Black Photographers Annual at VMFA

Through April 15

The second of four exhibitions at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts devoted to a seminal four-volume anthology. “Like a Study in Black History: P.H. Polk, Chester Higgins and the Black Photographers Annual, Volume 2” showcases the work of emerging black photographers published between 1973 and 1980, back when these artists had few options for getting their work noticed outside of the black press. Polk was the official college photographer at Tuskegee Institute and was an inspirational mentor to Higgins, who later became a staff photographer at the New York Times. Check out what these photographers were capturing on the ground while helping preserve and contextualize the talent of previous generations. The show runs through April 15. Free. vmfa.museum.
