Event Pick: Arlo Guthrie at Alice Jepson Theatre

Jan. 30 and 31

It’s been 50 years since Arlo Guthrie released his anti-war anthem, “Alice’s Restaurant.” While the song captures a moment in time, the lasting appeal of the 18-minute satirical lament is that it lives beyond the era. The draft may be a thing of the past, but Guthrie’s first-person account of 1960s counterculture can be applied to every American war since Vietnam. This weekend, Arlo Guthrie celebrates the 50th anniversary of the release of his signature song with multimedia performances Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 30 and 31, at the Modlin Center for the Arts in Alice Jepson Theatre. The shows will feature light-show enhancements, rarely seen photographs and Guthrie’s timeless and engaging wit. He doles out the past, present and future at 7:30 both nights. Tickets are $10-$50. modlin.richmond.edu.
