Despite our resurrection as an up-and-coming city, Richmond is still defined by its unsavory past. That’s never going to change — nor should it. But our newfound focus on the capital of creativity owes a great deal to Gwar. The city’s profane vaudevillians helped put Richmond on the map as an internationally known and respected breeding ground for unique inspirations. On Saturday, Aug. 20, the group is the host of Gwar B-Q, its annual showcase of amplified aggression-makers at Hadad’s Lake. It features a who’s who of fist-pumpers including Murphy’s Law, American Nightmare, Against Me, Eye Hate God (fronted by former Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo) and others. Richmond metal gods and former Gwar openers Lamb of God headline the day of riff-based barrages that includes a performance by the vulgar hosts. Before and after the main event, there are Gwar B-Q-related shows at the National and GwarBar to make it a full weekend of blasphemous entertainments.
