Gravehooker is my new favorite Richmond sound-maker. The sobriquet of Robert John Van Zanten, his music is a gravelly, vaguely Chicago blues amalgamation of rusted Tom Waits’ “Bone Machine” soul and the White Stripes’ catchy, first-take rock ’n’ roll. Like all the music that I like best, it’s music that knows no genre. The Imaginary Sons are straight-up party enablers, sure to please anyone with the Dirtbombs, Dickies or Blowfly records in their collection. Night Idea is more cerebral with its post-rock, arithmetic pop sound, and the instrumental, avant-garde offerings of local headliners Dumb Waiter are satisfying thematic symphonies for this modern age of melodic pluralism. This wondrously diverse local music showcase presented by Radio Rubber Room takes place Wednesday, April 9, at Emilo’s. Doors open at 10 p.m. Free. emiliosrva.com.
