Richmond’s Altria and Dominion Resources are among three Virginia companies making the top 100 in Forbes magazine’s “best employers” rating.
The third is Serco, a federal contractor based in Reston.
Dominion ranked No. 37 and was lauded for its competitive pay, diversity, focus on communities and corporate support (eight paid hours yearly) for employee volunteering.
Altria, the mother firm of cigarette maker Philip Morris USA, ranked 70th in the survey and got kudos for the firm’s generous contributions — 13 percent of an employee’s income — to 401(k) retirement programs, a free on-site gym and health clinic, and six weeks of maternity and paternity pay.
I don’t take such ratings of corporations all that seriously, but you have to admit that Dominion and Altria treat their employees well.
In Altria’s case, it’s ironic, because its products are deadly, but it certainly has devotedly loyal employees and retirees, as you’ll discover if you attend an annual shareholders’ meeting.
