Dust off the donkey for the zoo's nativity scene.

While the role of baby Jesus will most likely not be played by a giraffe, and while Joseph and Mary's parts shan't go to a penguin or a kangaroo, you'd still be hard-pressed to find a better re-enactment of the Christmas nativity story then the one at the Metro Richmond Zoo. Featuring many exotic animals including woolly sheep and spitting camels (as well as costumed humans), this pageant meets petting zoo takes its positions Dec. 21 at 7 p.m., 7:45 p.m., and 8:30 p.m., with additional showings Dec. 22 and 23. Those Bethlehem staples, Krispy Kreme doughnuts and hot chocolate, will be sold to benefit local charities. 8300 Beaver Bridge Road. 739-5666. — Mike Hilleary
