Spoiled for choice, Richmond dance lovers have a great buffet available this fall. Here's a sampling from behind the sneeze guard.
I'm a fan of hometown talent myself, so I'll take a moment to savor with anticipatory glee the wide range of local dance happenings. A perfect appetizer, Yes, Virginia Dance, brings a showcase of six dance artists to the Grace Street Theater stage Sept. 13. A couple of weeks later, you can have a drink with Z Mullins Dance Company during “Dancing in the Vineyard” at James River Cellars Sept. 28.
Also on the theme of local dance, Starr Foster Dance Project hits Grace Street Theater Oct. 9-11, with a main course company performance that includes several premieres. And look out for Latin Ballet of Virginia's “NuYoRican,” billed as true barrio stories, Oct. 17-19 at the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen.
Of course, the Richmond Ballet, River City's ballet standby, dishes out a good helping of works old and new this fall: “Studio 1” runs Sept. 16-21 with the poignant classic “Lilac Garden” by Antony Tudor and a premiere by William Soleau. “Studio 2” runs Nov. 11-16.
On the national front, New York-based choreographer Robert Battle brings his company, Battleworks, back to town for a return engagement at the University of Richmond's Modlin Center on Sept. 23-24. And in its first foray into international presenting, VCU Dance brings Mexico's Antares Danza ContemporAnea to the Grace Street Theater Oct. 24-25.
