Dance: Spring brings varied dance offerings

Several Richmond companies head out of town to make their mark on the world. Take a trip and cheer them on. First, Starr Foster Dance Project groupies should trek to Washington, D.C., Feb. 12-13 for “119 Miles Difference,” the modern company’s shared performance with D.C.-based Jane Franklin Dance at Joy of Motion. Or stick around Richmond for “Reflection: Then and Now,” the University of Richmond Dancers 20th Anniversary Spring Concert, Feb. 24-26 at the Alice Jepson Theatre, under the direction of Myra Daleng.

Just a few weeks later, on March 15, catch “one of the glories of American dance,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Modern dance icon Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company will grace the W.E. Singleton Center for one night, courtesy of the Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Dance and Choreography. Head back to Richmond Ballet’s Studio March 15-20 for “Destination New York,” a preview of the “greatest hits” program the ballet has put together for its New York City debut at the Joyce Theater.

For a shorter trip, try heading over to Live Arts theater in Charlottesville, April 1-9. Ground Zero Dance Company’s Rob Petres will premiere “Moment of Flight” in a co-production with Live Arts. Back home, choreographer/director Julie Mayo brings her company, dim sum dance, to the Firehouse Theatre May 26 and 27 with a selection of new and recent works.
