One of the hardest-working artists in Richmond is Dana Frostick, a Virginia Commonwealth University sculpture major and webmaster for Art Space. And she’s been working on a series called “Elaborate Doodles” since 2007. The award-winning, mixed-media works are rooted in tribal expression with sculpture, drawing and painting converging into an abstract vision of line, color and shapes. Intuitive in nature, the patterned pieces are defined by bold strokes and bursts of color over layers of Sharpie, paint, gesso and canvas. The body of work leaves the impression of unforced expression, as if Frostick were merely a vehicle through which the work had itself created. Frostick’s retrospective exhibition, “Protozoan Biomorphic Doodles,” opens Friday, March 6, at the Artemis Gallery.
