Craig Camidge, 37

Director of Emergency Management, Office of Emergency Management of the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services

This New Yorker came to Virginia to develop systems for disaster preparedness and response, recovery, and immigration services with a coalition of Roanoke public health providers.

Since 2018 Camidge has worked for the state in emergency leadership. His skills, and those of his 8,000 colleagues statewide whom he’s quick to credit, have been critical in responding to the pandemic since its onset. Last year his department provided counseling support following an active shooter who took 12 lives in Virginia Beach.

“Energetic demeanor,” “collaborative approach,” and “amazing communications abilities” are how his cohorts describe this Ashland resident and father of two.

Explains Camidge: “The ability to communicate is paramount in emergency situations.” He says his quick thinking and effective communication chops were honed as a white-water rafting instructor on the Moose, Black and Hudson rivers in the north country of New York.
