Last Train Home

The band’s most recent release, “Tributaries,” collects six songs the group released on various tribute albums over the years. Covering songs penned by such diverse sources as the Blasters, Gene Clark, Nanci Griffith and Michael Nesmith, the recording reveals the group’s country-rock roots as well as its uncanny style of making each song its own. Nesmith’s “Good Clean Fun” is slipped into a rousing, upbeat groove, while Clark’s “Train Leaves Here This Morning” swings with the heart of a gorgeous high-plains shuffle. The highlight is perhaps Dave Alvin’s “So Long Baby Goodbye.” Last Train’s version is slowed down, and it allows Brace’s urgent but honest vocal style to relate the song’s sorrowful tale with soul and taste.

With a tour of Australia and major U.S. city venues behind them, these guys are starting to make waves in the music world. The show coming up at Poe’s is the band’s first Richmond gig since the old Moondance days. “Tributaries” and the Last Train/Shiners bill are both highly recommended.
