Chrissie Griffith, the local bass goddess and Bamboo bartender extraordinaire, recently added a new gig to her undoubtedly funky fresh resume.
She’s now booking shows at Sound of Music Studios.
As anyone who knows her can attest, Chrissie has a lovely, unique style all her own. So it’s not surprising that she’s already doing unusual things in her new job. Like this weekend’s “Bring the Spring,” a free local vintage and handmade market held this Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. within the cavernous studio at 1515 W. Broad St.
Griffith and friend Kerensa Davenport (Tiger Tail Vintage) are pulling together some of their favorite cool collectors, curators, and creators including: Blue Bones Vintage; Ultra Violet Vintage; Maven Made; Addison Handmade and Vintage; The Creativist; Records and Relics RVA; Boom! Bloomers; Nighthawks Vintage and Upcycled Clothing; Grid+Love; Half Past Noon Jewelry; Meriweather Vintage; Keeper Leather and others.
“There will be everything from housewares and clothes to art and records and plenty in between,” Griffith says. “The music will be a variety of acoustic, gritty Americana, and upbeat folk. And ZZQ Barbecue will be dishing up treats for vegetarians and carnivores alike.”
They’ll also have a raffle to benefit the non-profit, Girls Rock RVA! — the summer camp helping to fill Richmond with great female musicians — with the big prize being a half-day of recording and mixing with Sound of Music; as well as local gift certificates.
“We’re expecting an upbeat festival vibe for anyone who couldn’t make it down to Austin,” Griffith adds. “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the arrival of my favorite time of year.”
Speaking of Girls Rock RVA, local drummer Patty Conway of the Ar-Kaics recently let me know about an online fundraiser the camp is conducting to pay for 25 stipends, $200 each, for this year’s camp volunteers. They don’t want their teachers to have to choose between something they love and paying their electric bills (what a concept).
The page has raised $1,580 dollars of their $5,000 goal with around 50 days left. You can check out this video below for more on Girls Rock.
