Kennedy Center Honors

It’s always nice to see the Kennedy Center Honors telecast roll around. It brightens up that otherwise dreary week of prime-time network reruns between the two holidays. This year, CBS will air the 23rd annual awards ceremony Dec. 27 from 9 to 11 p.m. Walter Cronkite (where was he when we needed his avuncular presence to keep things calm this past month?) is again the host, this time paying tribute to Mikhail Baryshnikov, Chuck Berry, Placido Domingo, Clint Eastwood, and Angela Lansbury. President Clinton along with his wife and daughter were on hand earlier this month for the taping of the awards, which also included a tribute to him, featuring highlights of past Kennedy Center Honors broadcasts. Celebrity participants in this year’s broadcast include Len Cariou, Glenn Close, Jacques d’Amboise, Morgan Freeman, Goldie Hawn, Judith Jamison, Gregory Hines, Tommy Lee Jones, Nathan Lane, Don Rickles, Beverly Sills, Donald Sutherland, Maria Tallchief, Billy Taylor and Edward Villella. There also will be music by the B-52s, the Black Crowes and — surely one of Clinton’s favorites — the irrepressible Little Richard.
