Behind the Photo: Runway 2016: EMERGE

Posted By on Fri, May 13, 2016 at 12:00 PM

The VMFA transformed into a runway mecca for an eye-popping show Sunday evening, as the VCU School of the Arts Department of Fashion Design and Merchandising presented Runway 2016: EMERGE.

Behind the photo: After years of concentrating on the action of an event, I sometimes find better photos in the reactions of spectators. I love this photo because sandwiched in between two people using cellphones to document the moment, you have a young women in awe and an elderly woman keenly appreciating the moment. The woman on the far right is icing on the cake, she's completely enjoying the show.

Behind the Photo: Earth Day in Manchester

Posted By on Fri, Apr 29, 2016 at 1:00 PM

The RVA Earth Day Festival last weekend turned Manchester from brick and mortar to a wonderland. The event got an extra spark from the No BS Brass band, which wove its way from the RVA Street Art Festival and through the narrow streets, followed by Richmonders of all ages dressed as puppets or simply waving banners and flags. Festival goers seemed in awe of the New Orleans style of an impromptu parade.

The beauty of it was that anyone could join in and march along. In this image, the narrow streets are filled with color that contrasts against the weathered red brick. The look of joy on bandleader Lance Koehler’s face perfectly sums up the event.

Behind the Photo: Whale Mural

Posted By on Fri, Apr 22, 2016 at 3:30 PM

On the site of the RVA Street Art Festival, happening this weekend, Nico Cathcart works on her painting of a whale. She says she hasn’t named the piece, but that she was reading Carl Sagan and thinking about cosmic possibility.

The transformation of the shipping container with the deep hues against the gray gravel and muted sky drew me in, while Nico’s pink hair and the travel trailer in the backdrop create layers to keep the eye moving deeper into the image. The entire site in Manchester, south of the Mayo Bridge, is being transformed into a feast for mural lovers.

Behind the Photo: Eagle Over Downtown Richmond

Posted By on Mon, Apr 18, 2016 at 8:30 AM

For nearly half an hour, I watched this bald eagle sit in a tree near the Mayo Bridge. When he took flight, he swooped near the river and the soared toward the skyline.

The eagle framed against the buildings places the image in Richmond, which must be one of the best-kept secrets anywhere for observing waterfowl and birds of prey in an urban setting. The shad run is happening now on the James, a bonus for those seeking to see an eagle or osprey in action.

Behind the Photo: Tulips and Old City Hall

Posted on Fri, Apr 8, 2016 at 12:50 PM

While wandering around the grounds of the State Capitol, I noticed the bright red tulips with Old City Hall in the backdrop. I love the contrast between the deep red of the flowers and the gray of the stone.

By shooting low, I eliminated any distraction in the foreground. Of course, a bright blue sky never hurts when trying to make a landscape photo pop.

The Lens: Singing Shorty

Posted By on Fri, Apr 1, 2016 at 7:00 AM

On Saturday evening I was working on feature story about Broad Street, and as I turned the corner near Comfort I ran into Singing Shorty aka Alphonso Washington.

He looked at me and said "let me sing you a song". Before I could say a word he launched into a dark tune about death and despair. All this was delivered with the utmost sincerity.

When he finished he said, "If I'm singing that means I'm not drinking. I just have to keep singing."

Behind the Photo: River Road Cherry Blossoms

Posted By on Sun, Mar 20, 2016 at 1:59 PM

There’s nothing as dramatic on the Richmond landscape as the trees blossoming in Richmond this week.

On River Road I noticed a huge cherry tree backlit by the sun. Once I stood under the tree, I noticed the sun illuminating a branch of blossoms. I concentrated on this one branch and used a shallow depth of field, which created a palette of pink and blue in the background.

Camera settings: 1/2000 second at F/4, ISO 200, Nikon D750.

Behind the Photo: Oregon Hill Magnolia

Posted By on Fri, Mar 11, 2016 at 2:05 PM

Spring is emerging in Oregon Hill, the home of Richmond’s grandest cemetery. Most of the trees are still dormant, but this magnolia is in full bloom.

As I took this shot I noticed the pedals blowing off rapidly, and I knew this beauty was fleeting. The light-bulb moment wasn’t lost on me that I was standing among a sea of gray headstones.

Photographed with a Nikon D750, 24mm, 1/1000 second at F/11.

Behind the Photo: Isuzu Pup and Chevy SSR

Posted By on Fri, Mar 4, 2016 at 5:00 PM

Yesterday, while in Petersburg, I noticed this rusty Isuzu Pup truck with antique plates parked in an empty parking lot. In the background sat a newer Chevy SSR. The juxtaposition of the old and new makes the shot.

While trying to do a bit of research on the Pup, I read a humorous quote on the site dedicated to the "humble little Isuzu Pup". "If there's ever a nuclear holocaust, the only thing left will cockroaches and Isuzu diesels. From what I gather, the first generation of these vehicles came out between 1972 and 1980. This one's registration had expired in 2012.
