When it comes to cool vintage clothing stores, it’s tough to beat Bygones, right next to the historic Byrd Theatre in Carytown. Just walk in the store and you feel like you’ve gone back in time (to a much cooler time, actually).
It has been bringing the glamour of old Hollywood to Richmond for the past 40 years, and while the store is known for timeless ladies’ fashions and vintage jewelry, it has also greatly expanded the men’s collections in back. If you’re looking for ’60s and ’70s shirts, pants or fedoras, this is definitely the place to go.
“We’re really pushing the menswear, demand has doubled in the last year,” says manager Olivia Lloyd, also the founder and president of the Art Deco Society of Virginia. “We’re selling a lot of suits, which are cheaper than anywhere in town.”
The store also buys men’s and women’s clothing, jewelry and accessories dating from 1900 to 1975, so if you’ve got stuff like men’s suits from the 1940s, women’s dresses from the ’20s, ’30s and ’40s, and they’re in good condition, you should definitely check with the knowledgeable staff. The store’s open seven days a week.
“We’re always searching for menswear of any era,” she adds. “We get new old things every week, and new new things every week [mostly reproductions].”
The Bygones’ website will take you to curated museum quality pieces on its Etsy account and you can also follow the store on Instagram.
