Kroger’s presence in Richmond has provided consistency and reliability even as some continue to mourn Ukrop’s departure. Kroger wins for its accessibility, decent prices and surprisingly local beer selection. And the recent addition of Ukrop’s baked goods (under the name Good Meadow Homemades) doesn’t hurt. Whole Foods — the nationwide bastion of upscale groceries with a location in Short Pump — is ready to muscle in on the Virginia Commonwealth University student market when its new store opens on Broad Street, though a date hasn’t been announced. Fresh Market offers up a similar but cozier aesthetic at its Carytown, Midlothian and Parham Road locations.
