An Bui’s constant refrain, “Beer is the answer,” is something that he had to teach Richmonders. Their 20-year love affair with Mekong dates back to its humble beginnings as a simple Vietnamese restaurant, moving through its development as everyone’s favorite place when it came to first Belgian and then craft beer offerings, to its title as Best Beer Bar in America by Craftbeer.com, winning the award multiple times. And then, just because he could, Bui opened a brewpub right next door called the Answer, dedicated to making its own craft beer under head brewer Brandon Tolbert. Although it was the Answer’s IPA, Larceny, that won Virginia Brewer’s Cup best in show award, you can drink it on tap at Mekong, along with more than 200 other varieties from which to choose. Multiple locations make Capital Ale House’s dizzying selection of more than 100 beers on tap and 200-plus in the bottle available across the city. Jack Brown’s 100-beer menu may not be as extensive as the other two, but c’mon — 100 choices isn’t too shabby, wouldn’t you say?
