The span that hangs from the Lee Bridge is wide enough for cyclists and pedestrians, but once cyclists reach Belle Isle they know they are bound for the steep hills and rocky paths of the often jagged landscape. Others enjoy bouncing along the rugged trails, speeding through marshy water in the sometimes junglelike spaces. Then, with little warning, there’s an open space, a straightaway for a few yards, before disappearing again into the foliage.
