When you name your restaurant after a meal, you’d better live up it. Lunch rises to the occasion with sandwiches such as the Parker Field with bacon, avocado spread and Duke’s mayonnaise or the irresistible Southern Pride BLT with fried green tomatoes, bacon and pimento cheese on Texas toast. In the Park Avenue corner spot where Garnett’s resides, the neighborhood was yearning for a place to call home. Kendra Feather, owner of Ipanema Cafe, the Roosevelt and Laura Lee’s, saw an opportunity and brought out the sandwiches in her vintage-styled cafe. A series of specials named after VCU’s first basketball dream team was scuttled by the administration, but the Point Guard — turkey, bacon, caramelized onions and pickled jalapeños — and the Coach — roast beef, pimento cheese and spicy sauce — sneaked onto the menu. It all goes down easily with sweet mint iced tea and a piece of homemade pie.
