Richmonders have opinions when it comes to pizza. Whether it’s the concept of authenticity, the crust texture or the sauce-to-cheese ratio, it’s not hard to stir up a lively debate on the pizza front. But when it comes to takeout pizza, it seems that 8 1/2 reigns supreme.

The original location made its debut in the Fan in the early 2000s, and it’s chugged along amid the many changes to Strawberry Street in the meantime. The menu is small and simple: red-sauced pizzas with about a dozen toppings to choose from, white pizza with fontina cheese, calzones, a few pastas, a handful of entrees and some heroes (get the meatball). Desserts include cannoli (plain and chocolate-dipped), tiramisu and sfogliatelle, a flaky Italian pastry.

In April 2018, a second location quietly opened in Church Hill. The Marshall Street spot serves up the same menu, and much like the original, it’s only a couple blocks away from a small park — the perfect spot for a pizza picnic.
