Best Local Radio Station

First Place: 103.7 Play

Second Place: 97.3-FM WRIR

Third Place: XL102

Here’s one thing Democrats and Republicans agree on: America’s greatest year was 2000, a recent survey by Morning Consult found. The terrorist attacks of 9/11 hadn’t happened. The economy was kickin’. Our biggest worry was the lights going out on Y2K. The party alignment stops there, of course. Democrats surveyed said that things are getting better in 2016, with Republicans citing the mid-’80s among the country’s greatest moments. Maybe that’s why 103.7 Play found a winning formula with its ’90s, 2K and Today format — it’s something everyone can agree on. Even if you have little love for Santana and Creed, keep listening and you’ll get some Adele or Neon Trees. On WRIR, you’ll hear such eclectic shows as “Cosmic Slop” (“an intergalactic stew of spaced out sounds”), “Ambiance Congo” (“the best of Congolese popular music”) and “The Thomas Jefferson Hour” (exactly what it sounds like). And XL102 plays to Richmond’s Gen-Xers and hipsters alike with alt-rock from the ’90s through now.
