Friday Cheers

Second Place: Innsbrook After Hours

Third Place: Music from Grace

Organizer Steven Lecky says he’s still fighting misconceptions about Friday Cheers, the early summer music series held on Brown’s Island, particularly from those who consider it to be something for older folks, or “your dad’s Friday Cheers,” he says. Voters still consider it the best series in town, so it looks like he’s doing something right. Lecky books up-and-coming acts in a diverse range, from alternative country to indie rock and soul to world music. And if the weather’s right, crowds have been known to swell. The Alabama Shakes show was a truly massive event. Innsbrook After Hours celebrates its 30th anniversary this summer with a full slate of artists as diverse as Buddy Guy, ZZ Top, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, 311 and Hank Williams Jr. Richmond’s growing chamber music series, Music from Grace, rounds out the winners’ list. It usually takes place at Grace Baptist Church at 4200 Dover Road.
