People have been counting on Babes in Carytown for 31 years now. Why? “Because it’s so laid-back,” owner Vicky Hester says. “It’s a neighborhood bar, everybody’s welcome.” Out back, you can get some fresh air with corn hole and volleyball. And inside, there always seems to be something going on: country line dancing on Tuesday, karaoke on Wednesday. And Thursdays bring the XXX Divas drag show with Michelle Livigne. As for the crowd, it’s a good time. “They like to dance,” Hester says. The home of the drag brunch, Godfrey’s, boasts of a personal, lively atmosphere. And Barcode, where there’s a big back patio for mingling, has been offering a colorful scene since November 2001.
