In a town known for festivals, the annual Greek Festival at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral could be considered the granddaddy of them all, having begun the year of the U.S. Bicentennial, 1976. The big news this year, of course, is that the four-day food and culture festival in June and the fall Mini-Greek Festival have both been postponed until 2021 to ensure the health and safety of volunteers, entertainers, vendors and participants.
Andrea Junes Baker, part of the team who puts the festival on, says she knows why the festival resonates for so many people.
“When people come to the festival, they’re welcomed not just physically but spiritually as well,” she explains. “It’s kefi, the Greek spirit of welcome and joy, that’s what they feel. Yes, the food is amazing, but it’s much more than food.”
The good news is, plans are already underway for next year’s festival, so mark your calendars now for June 3 through 6, 2021, to get your annual fix of moussaka and spanakopita.
