“Man vs. Food” star Adam Richman’s 2010 visit to Richmond, when he took the stupid-wings challenge at Caliente, only whetted our appetite for competitive eating. Hunt around town and you’ll find food challenges such as Station 2’s station ladder, a three-patty cheeseburger with two pounds of chips, sweet-potato tots and fries, to be consumed in 15 minutes. But the most brutal, by far, is Mekong’s annual Pho King challenge, held Super Bowl Sunday. Competitors race to slurp up a giant bowl of pho noodle soup, followed by a liter of dark Belgian beer. It’s Richmond’s most awe- (and vomit-) inspiring contest.
