Today, many of us think of Strange’s nurseries as a place to get plants for our yards, but back in the 1930s, founder Gideon Strange was growing flowers in his backyard greenhouses to create arrangements to sell at his shop. President and Chief Executive Bill Gouldin, whose father bought the business in 1947, tells us that the flowers in Strange’s bouquets now arrive in Miami via specially designed 747s from Bogota, Colombia. Twice a week, roses, stargazer lilies and many other varieties come by refrigerated truck to Richmond, ready to become arrangements for mothers, friends and sweethearts across the region.
