This popular annual event does more than just bring in French movies and filmmakers, facilitate student films and generally put Richmond on the international map. It also brings in technicians from Cannes to work on the projectors in the Byrd Theatre, making it the only historic cinema palace in the United States to have high-quality screenings. French cinéastes are impressed with the results too — in June, festival founders Peter and Francoise Kirkpatrick will receive the 2011 Médaille Beaumarchais from the French Writer’s Guild.
