There come to Richmond three men: a punk, a cowboy and a man with a gift for making people laugh. And the city conspires to bring them and two likeminded others together to open a barbershop. Not your father’s barbershop, but a place for male, female, black, white and all hues between — be they bearded or not. “We wanted to be what Richmond was: diverse, artistic, culturally booming,” says barber-owner David Foster, the punk in this story. Just nine months old, High Point is clearly onto something, with a rollicking atmosphere and tight cuts. Dot Reid opened Refuge for Men in 2009. “Our main phrase is, ‘It’s not just a haircut,’” marketing director Austin Higgs says. “You may come in for a haircut, but we hope you leave with a better attitude and more confidence.” Parkside Barbershop offers not only a cut and shave, but also massages, manicures, pedicures and shoeshines from a staff that says professional from its neckties to its neck trims.
