Family-owned and operated since it opened during the Clinton administration, Lyman Automotive in Midlothian has been in business for over 23 years. The first-place winner in the Best Auto Service Shop category extended its service area considerably two years ago when it opened a second location in Powhatan. Why Powhatan? Owner James Lyman lives there and had been looking for a facility out that way for years. When one became available, he grabbed it and local car owners took note.
Meeting people in the community through both locations is understandably Lyman’s favorite part of the job. “We’re not big or heavy into advertising, so 90% of all of our customers are by referral,” Lyman says. “The only way we’re able to do this is by maintaining an extremely high and personal level of service.”
Lyman Automotive is a full-service center, offering a wide range of services for tires, air conditioning, brakes and diagnostics. Part of the reason customers seek out Lyman’s is because it services all makes and models, including major engine and transmission work. Fully equipped with the latest technology in the auto repair industry from three-dimensional alignment machines to automatic tire machines, Lyman’s took a hit at the beginning of the pandemic but managed to stay open and work through it. And now? “Business is booming,” Lyman says proudly.
