Beards are everywhere. Dismissed recently as a hipster fashion statement by the glabrescent, hair on a man’s face knows no allegiance to any culture or social subset. Beards are just what happens when you don’t shave. “Beard Wars,” the exhibition of portraits by Terry Brown opening Thursday, March 26, at the Valentine, showcases the now-and-then of facial adornments. Inspired by the museum’s collection of Civil War generals, Brown photographed members of local facial hair aficionados the RVA Beard League in the style of their beard-sporting Confederate counterparts. The visual homage includes the myriad mustaches, mutton chops, underbeards and sideburns still being sported today, as well as shaving accessories and other objects from the Valentine’s vast collection.
