Stay away from sprouts — at least for a little while. Good Seed Inc. in Springfield, is recalling — for the second time — all of its soybean and mung bean sprouts immediately. A sample taken by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services food safety program tested positive for listeria. Listeria can cause a whole range of symptoms including fever, headache, a stiff neck, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea and convulsions. Listeria infections can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths –and even death in the elderly and immune-compromised.

Symptoms appear around three weeks after ingestion, although sometimes they can occur as early as seven days or as late as 70.

Although the company and the state agriculture department haven’t released the names of the stores carrying the sprouts, they’re in Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey.

Look for sprouts that were produced on or after June 22. Earlier this year, the department issued a recall of listeria-contaminated Good Seed Inc. sprouts that had production dates of April 1.
