Original Ronnie's BBQ in Varina wins 'best chef' in Chicago.

The Original Ronnie’s BBQ restaurant recently competed in the Six in the City Southern BBQ Experience event in Chicago and won “best chef.”

Chef Ronnie Logan, who Style Weekly wrote about and photographed at the beginning of this year, and his staff partnered with Richmond Regional Tourism as a way to introduce meeting planners to destinations around the country and regional culinary specialties. They competed against Birmingham, Ala., Columbia, S.C., Louisville, Ky., Memphis, Tenn., and Raleigh, N.C. Richmond Regional Tourism has participated in the event for four years, but this is the first time the River City has brought home the top spot.

 

The win is particularly notable since the commonwealth is the birthplace of American barbecue, and the state is beginning to come to the forefront on a national stage with mentions in print publications such as Wildsam and on the Chasing Flavor television show.

Approximately 150 meeting planners in attendance deemed Ronnie’s as the winner after being served brown sugar bacon sriracha deviled eggs, smoked brisket, macaroni and cheese, honey butter cornbread and sweet tea lemonade pound cake.

“This was an exciting win for our region,” says Jerrine Lee, vice-president of sales in Richmond. “Ronnie’s helped give attendees a taste of our incredible food scene.”

Ronnie’s BBQ is located at 2097 New Market Rd., and is open on Fridays-Sundays, from noon to 7 p.m. or until sold out.
