Ballpark Boosters Win Contract to Redevelop Boulevard

A company whose executives long have advocated for a Shockoe Bottom ballpark will oversee a phase of redevelopment on the Boulevard — including the land occupied by the current baseball stadium.

The city awarded a $150,000 contract for design and construction administration of the site to Timmons Group, giving the company responsibility for the first round of redeveloping city-owned property.

Mayor Dwight Jones’ economic development plan hinges on moving the stadium from the Boulevard to the Bottom to make room for a new mixed-use development, which he says will bring hundreds of thousands of dollars in new tax revenue to the city. City Council still must sign off on the plan.

Timmons Group executives, including its director of business development, Tim Davey, started the Richmond Ballpark Initiative, which publicly unveiled the first proposal for a Shockoe Bottom ballpark in 2003, according to news reports at the time. Before the public announcement, RBI discussed its proposal in a closed session of City Council. It later declined to identify its full roster of supporters.

Timmons already has done work for the city in relation to Mayor Jones’ plan, producing a traffic analysis of Shockoe Bottom.
