In the spirit of transparency, we decided to get a head start. Last week, Style waded through a large stack of the foundation’s reimbursement requests that may or may not be related to pre-construction costs, such as a bill for $800 to rent space at C3, the Creative Change Center in Shockoe Bottom, for a “Partnering Workshop.”
The workshop included breakfast and lunch by Concepts in Catering, travel expenses from Organizational Excellence International of $4,918, and cocktails and dinner at the Hard Shell restaurant. The event also included James Coles, who facilitated an “Afro-Brazilian-Caribbean Percussion Demonstration/Jam” described as such:
“This interactive drumming session is designed to encourage collective improvisation. The session introduces Samba rhythms & dance from Brazil. An introduction & demonstration of Afro-Brazilian-Caribbean percussion instruments will be provided. Participants will be assigned percussion instruments and asked to create an instant ensemble while working a Samba Rhythmic groove. Each participant will have an opportunity to solo while the remaining ensemble supports the foundation of the music provided. This activity is sure to spark creativity, encourage teamwork, and explain the fundamentals of building a highly complex composition using very basic elements of music.”
