Well-known local artist and teacher Noah Scalin, known for his Skull-A-Day project and coffee table book, will be painting the 15h Annual Richmond Folk Festival poster as a giant mural next week — and people are invited to watch him do it.
If you want to come out and see the poster image created in real-time, show up at the Broadberry, 2729 W. Broad St. between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. either Aug. 7, 8 or 9. That’s right across from the Science Museum, near the corner of Broad and Arthur Ashe Blvd.
Scalin’s work for the festival should be impressive. The first artist-in-residence at the VCU School of Business, he is known for his amazing collage work (see video) and was even invited on the Martha Stewart show once to talk about his Skull-A-Day project. Tickets for the 7th annual Folk Feast, one of the tastiest nights of the year, have been on sale since July 25. It is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 500 Tredegar St. from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The culinary extravaganza features some of the best local grub in support of the festival.
Among the 22 familiar local chefs on the list this year are: Africanne on Main’s Ida MaMusu, Comfort and Bingo Beer Company’s Jason Alley, Dutch & Co’s Caleb Shriver, Fatty Smokes’ Mike Lindsay, Mama J’s Velma Johnson, Metzger Bar and Butchery and Brenner Pass’ Brittanny Anderson, and many more big foodie names.
Tickets cost $110 bucks, but those proceeds will go to help offset the production costs for the RFF which usually average around $1.5 million annually.
