Artisan Café Anniversary

Saturday, Dec. 8. 6 p.m. $5.

When Richmond native Melody Short returned in 2008 after years spent in New York and Washington, she recognized a need for a regular event that would bring together artisans of different disciplines and allow them to sell their works. She founded the MJS Collection, which she describes as a “lifestyle architect firm,” and worked with fellow Richmond native Adrienne Cole. They launched Artisan Café last December. The curated, quarterly event, which is held in various artist-loft showrooms, features creators of visual art, apparel, literature and home décor, all exhibiting their work for sale. The success of the first event led to some ink in national publications such as Essence, and the cafe became a finalist for the Chamber of Commerce’s startup business competition. Its one-year anniversary is only the second event being held at the Emerald Barn. More than 30 artisans, including buzz-worthy handbag designer Nneka Saran and visual artist S. Ross Brown, will exhibit their work. The event also will feature the music of Sam Reed, and records spun by DJs Nobe and Prolific. Saturday, Dec. 8. 6 p.m. $5 the Emerald Barn, 1620 Brook Road, 874-4045, artisancafeva.com.
