“Quirky” is a label often applied to Cake, and it’s a label justly earned by the Sacramento alt-rock band. How else to describe a group that covers tunes from both Kenny Rogers and Black Sabbath on its latest effort? Since the 1994 debut “Motorcade of Generosity,” Cake’s distinctive sound has remained consistent: Singer John McCrea’s arch, detached vocals and witty lyrics deliver observant social commentary over blurts of trumpet and other musical blips. With “B-Sides and Rarities,” an oddly appealing collection of remakes, Cake extends its quirk to the works of others. The band plays Toad’s Place on the 14-city Unlimited Sunshine tour Sunday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m., along with Detroit Cobras, Oakley Hall, King City and Agent Ribbons. $30-$35. 648-TOAD. S
