Antero “Victims of Profit” CD Release at the Camel

Sunday, April 20. 2 p.m.

Antero makes great reggae music. As with all indigenous music made outside its place of origin, I was skeptical at first. But these rootless cosmopolitans play classic Jamaican roots rock reggae as if they created it. Their new release, “Victims of Profit,” is a satisfying listen. Invoking 1970s masters such as Toots and the Maytals, Burning Spear and Gregory Isaacs, tunes such as “Rise Up,” “Evidence” and the title track convey their themes of righteousness with flesh-and-bone clarity and purpose. Production is stellar throughout, giving each clarion call its blood and fire. Singer and guitarist Wylie Jones is particularly impressive leading the group. His wounded but unbowed nasal husk of a voice is icing on the band’s cake. Antero celebrates the release of its second full-length CD on Sunday, April 20, with an afternoon performance starting at 2 p.m. at the Camel. Free. thecamel.org.
