As the top litigator for Virginia, Anne Lloyd argues dozens of cases annually before the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Virginia, upholding the highest ethical standards to achieve just outcomes.

“The office of solicitor general is most effective as a non-partisan, smart litigator who can be trusted to do the work and find the answers,” Lloyd explains. “No matter who heads up the office, it’s absolutely essential to be known for that.”

She’s also proud of her work as chair of the Downtown YMCA’s board since 2020.

“The board is full of people who want to be hands-on in the community,” she says. In her first year, she diversified and grew the board by seven members. “We go out into the groups we serve to seek their input on how we can be most helpful.”

Every YMCA branch has team leaders, drawn from a variety of schools to ensure diversity and brought in to learn leadership and service skills. When the team leaders asked for a mental health training workshop, one was convened to talk with the students about coping strategies, social determinants of health and trends. “Then the team leaders asked for their parents to be involved, explaining that their parents weren’t on the same page,” Lloyd recalls. “So, we scheduled another workshop to train teens and parents to speak the same language.”

Workforce development is another focus. Lloyd was part of the team organizing the first-ever career fair at Armstrong High School, with another already scheduled for spring.

“We had so many employers wanting to participate that we had space concerns,” she says. “We were able to connect a huge talent pool of enthusiastic kids who want to work with a large pool of employers eager to hire. It made me really proud of what the board has done.”

With the change of administration, Lloyd has recently moved on to a position as Senior Managing Counsel for Twitter. Her reasoning?

“It will expand my repertoire and I’m excited to work on global human rights and global law enforcement,” she says.
