Interior Design Basics
A course at the Studio School of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts examines color, pattern, texture, ornament and scale. Sally Brown teaches this survey of interior spaces, products, materials and furniture. Students build simple models to help them learn problem-solving skills and interior design strategies. The work of professional designers is examined during weekly slide presentations.
Two sections: Mondays and Wednesdays, July 7 –23, 1 –4 p.m.

French Hens Sell Again
Accessory lovers, treasure seekers and inveterate shoppers have another opportunity to gather this month, as Three French Hens opens for a June sale of antiques, collectibles and decorative accessories.
The partners will set up shop at 1300 W. Main St., formerly a bank, a disco and most recently a film-production studio. For the sale, the building will be stocked with furniture, rugs, lighting, wall art and an eclectic assortment of merchandise.
Sale dates are June 13-14, June 20-21, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and June 22, 1-5 p.m.
Feng Shui for Interiors
Another course taught by Sally Brown, a professional interior designer and architectural critic, focuses on the ancient Chinese philosophy Feng Shui. The introductory course explores practical solutions for interiors that complement the relationship between people and the places they inhabit, using the metaphorical guide to maintaining physical,
emotional and environmental balance.
Tuesdays, July 1-22, 1-4 p.m.
Course is $125, $110 for VMFA members.
Enrollment limit is 10.
Additional courses in stained glass, contemporary quilting, fabrics, art for the garden, painting, pottery, photography, printmaking and more subjects are offered in summer sessions and throughout the year.

Asian Plants for Virginia Gardens
Learn which varieties of Asian plants work best in local gardens at a lecture and demonstration by Holly and Osamu Shimizu, experts in the profession. The program is part of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s “Branching Out” education series, which also includes courses on flower arranging, backyard bird habitats and other garden topics.
The Asian plants program features a lecture, pruning and training demonstration and an optional 30-minute tour of the Asian Valley garden at Lewis Ginter.
Holly Shimizu is director of the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C.
Course is offered Friday, June 27 and Saturday, June 28. Course fee is $30, $25 for members of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.
