So why move? Why the 5th?

“I’m assuming Rudy’s going to run” to be mayor-at-large, he says, of Richmond Mayor and 5th District Councilman Rudolph C. McCollum Jr. He’s mayor now because his colleagues on council elected him. But it appears voters will chose their mayor in a general election this November. “I admire Rudy. He and I are friends,” Brandon says. “He’ll be a wonderful mayor.”

McCollum did not return Style’s calls for comment by press time.

Brandon, former owner of Davis and Main restaurant, is widely known for his roles as an outspoken member of the Fan District Association and as president of the Your Neighbors Uptown Association. He’s a fiery proponent of recycling and an avid supporter of Virginia products and businesses.

He pledges to offer accountability, an understanding of city processes and the necessary time, he says, to pursue everything from small issues to drug-related crime that troubles the city. “Not being a lawyer or a reverend, I can afford to do this full time,” he assures.

Brandon also is political chair of the Falls of the James group of the Virginia chapter of the Sierra Club. He’s served as chairman of the city’s Near West Team. His hobbies include yoga, films, the Redskins and baseball. He’s a Richmond Braves fan who attended more than 30 home games last year. He’s opposed to a downtown ballpark and enjoys The Diamond: “The view of downtown from the third baseline is one of the best in the city.” — Brandon Walters
